Written Directions
Seam allowances are 0.5".
TIP: When turning the project right-side-out, if the corners are not lying flat, cut more excess fabric off the inside seam at the corner in question.
- Place both pieces A with right sides of fabric facing, lining up all edges. Pin in place.
- Sew around all edges to attach these two pieces together, leaving a 4-inch un-stitched section along one long diagonal edge. Reverse stitch on both sides of the hole.
- Cut excess fabric from outside the stitchline on corners that point out and make a snip in toward the stitchline on corners that point in. This will allow the project to lie flat when turned. If you accidentally snip through the stitch line, restitch along that spot.
- Reach into the hole left in step 2 and turn right side out, poking all corners out.
- Press entire project flat, with seamlines pulled out to the edge and raw edges turned into the hole 1/2 inch.
- Topstitch around all edges, about 1/8-to-1/4 inch away from the project edges, including your 4" gap.
- Topstitch again, along the top and bottom edge of the project, 1/2 inch away from the folded edge.
- Fold both long diagonal edges over toward the accent fabric side of the project. Each folded flap should be 1.75 inches wide. Smooth flat and pin in place. These will become tubes to hold the apron strap.
- Topstitch along long topstichted edge of both folded flaps to hold them in place. Reverse stitch at beginning and end of stitch lines.
- Working with both pieces C, fold long raw edges toward wrong side of fabric 1/2 inch and press to hold fold. Do this with both long edges on both pieces C.
- Fold both pieces C in half, with wrong sides of fabric still facing, matching long folded edges with each other. Press to hold. This should create a strap with long raw edges inside.
- Topstitch along both long edges of each strap piece to hold together.
- Fold both pieces C in half, matching short raw ends with each other, and pin to hold. This should make a loop shape with each piece C.
- Place piece B with the right side of the fabric facing upward, laid out with one short edge closest to you and the top of fabric print (if applicable) toward the short edge furthest away from you.
- Place one loop from step 13 along the left long edge, 1.5 inches up from the bottom left corner, matching raw edges and with folded edge pointed toward the center of piece B. Place second loop 5.5 inches up from the bottom left corner, in a similar fashion.
- Fold piece B in half, matching short edges with each other, and with right side of fabric facing itself. Line up all raw edges and pin in place.
- Sew around pinned edges of piece B, starting on the side with the loops and stopping about 3 inches before the end of the last raw edge. Reverse stitch at beginning and end.
- Cut excess fabric from outside the stitchline at corners and turn right side out through the hole left in step 17, poking all corners out.
- Press entire piece flat, with seamlines pulled out to the edge and raw edges turned into the hole 1/2 inch.
- Topstitch along folded edge 1/2 inch from folded edge.
- Arrange sewn pocket on main fabric side of main apron piece, on the bottom left corner of the apron. Bottom of pocket should be 1.5 inches away from bottom of apron and left side of pocket should be 2.5 inches away from left side of apron. Smooth flat and pin in place.
- Topstitch along both side edges and bottom edge of pocket piece, about 1/8-to-1/4 inch away from the pocket edges, to hold it in place on the apron. Reverse stitch at the top of both side edges.
- Working with pieces D, match one diagonal short edge of one piece D with a diagonal short edge of a second piece D, right sides of fabric facing each other. The main parts of these strap pieces should not be on top of each other, rather they should form a large L-shape when laid out. Pin and sew along this short edge.
- Press this sewn diagonal edge so that the seam allowance is open.
- Repeat steps 23 and 24 with one end of the sewn pair of pieces D with one short end of the last remaining piece D.
- On this long piece, fold both long raw edges toward wrong side of fabric 1/2 inch down the entire length of the piece and press to hold fold.
- Fold long strip in half, with wrong sides of fabric still facing, matching long folded edges with each other. Press to hold. This should create a strap with long raw edges inside.
- Turn raw edges on short ends of strap toward inside 1/2 inch and press to hold in place.
- Topstitch along all four edges of this long strap piece to hold together.
- String long strap piece through both tubes created in step 8 and 9, starting from the bottom right of apron and ending on the bottom left of apron.
