Spring Cleaning and Maintenance for Your Sewing Machine: Simple Tasks Every Sewist Should Know

Why Is It Important?

A sewing machine is exactly that—a machine. It has moving parts, electrical components, and small mechanisms that all need occasional care to function properly. Avoiding maintenance and regular cleaning can lead to poor or noisy performance, misalignment, unnecessary wear, and even damage that requires professional repair or replacement parts.

A well-maintained sewing machine can last for years, sometimes even becoming a family heirloom. Taking a little time to care for your machine now can make a big difference in how it performs over time. We hope this guide helps you feel confident and empowered to keep everything running smoothly.

Consistency Is Key

One of the best ways to keep your sewing machine running smoothly is to make maintenance a regular habit. It doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming, even basic, regular care can prevent big issues down the road.

There’s no one-size-fits-all routine. How often you clean and maintain your machine will depend on how much you sew, the types of projects you work on, and even the specific machine you use. Someone sewing daily will need to clean and check their machine more often than someone who sews occasionally and different machines may have different needs.

Because your needs will be based on your own circumstances, focus on building a rhythm that works for you. You might do a quick clean after each small project with a more thorough check after completing a few projects. Or, if you sew occasionally throughout the month, you can add it to your monthly calendar and stick to a schedule.

The goal is consistency and you can get started at any time. A little regular care goes a long way in keeping your machine running well and making your sewing experience more enjoyable.

Simple Maintenance Tasks to Keep Your Machine Running Smoothly

  • Use Quality Thread- Thread quality matters more than you might think. Lower-quality thread can create excess lint and lead to tension problems. Using a reliable thread and storing it properly can make a noticeable difference in your sewing experience.

At Sew What Box, Gütermann is our preferred thread. You can find a selection of Gütermann threads in the Tools/Notions section of our Project Shop right here: Project Shop - Sew-What-Box

  • Clean Out Lint and Dust- Lint builds up quickly, especially around the bobbin area and under the throat plate. Taking a moment to gently remove lint with a brush can help prevent tension issues and keep your machine running smoothly.

DO NOT USE AIR/BLOWING TO CLEAN INSIDE YOUR SEWING MACHINE. Doing so can blow particles deeper into the moving parts. Also avoid cleaning spray and/or wipes so that moisture cannot get inside.

  • Prevent Lint and Dust- Keep your machine, threads, and fabrics covered when not in use. There are many options to buy (or sew!) a fitted cover for your machine, but even draping some spare fabric or a towel over it is a great start!

  • Change Your Needle Often- A dull or damaged needle can cause skipped stitches, uneven seams, or even fabric damage. Changing your needle regularly—and making sure you’re using the correct type for your fabric—can instantly improve your results.

  • Check Your Bobbin- Using the correct bobbin for your machine and ensuring it is wound properly can prevent a lot of common issues. Check your manual to be sure you are using the correct type. Avoid overfilling, and take a quick look for lint or tangles before inserting it.

  • Replace Lightbulbs as Needed- Good visibility makes sewing easier and more enjoyable. If your machine’s light is dim or burned out, replacing it is a simple way to improve your workspace. Some machines have special lightbulb removal/placement tools, so be sure to check all your accessories.

  • Lubrication (If Your Machine Requires It)- Some machines require occasional oiling, while others do not. Always check your machine’s manual before applying any lubricant, and follow the recommended guidelines.

Pay Attention to Changes

You know your machine best. If it starts making unusual noises, shaking, skipping stitches, or feeling different in other ways while sewing, it’s worth pausing to check the basics. Often, small issues like lint buildup, threading, or a dull needle are the cause.

A great way to zero in your machine’s performance is to turn the power off and use the handwheel to go through some stitches(always turn toward you!). You will be able to hear, see, and feel your machine well and can isolate where an issue may be coming from.

When to Seek Professional Servicing

Even with regular at-home care, it’s a good idea to have your machine professionally serviced from time to time. This helps keep everything properly aligned and running at its best. A professional technician will know what to check and has access to all the proper tools and parts to get the work done properly.

We recommend scheduling a service tune up on your machine if:

  • If you sew a lot and haven’t had one done in a while
  • It has been transported a great distance where it could have been jostled around
  • It has been stored for a long period of time
  • You received it secondhand and don’t know its maintenance history
  • You notice something is off and can’t resolve it yourself

The sooner you get it checked out, the better. Small problems can become big if they are not addressed in time.

5 Minute Sewing Machine Refresh Checklist

We covered a lot of information. Here is a bite-sized checklist for you to reference when you want to give your machine a little attention in a manageable amount of time.

  • Change your needle
  • Clean lint from the bobbin area
  • Remove lint under the throat plate
  • Re-thread your machine
  • Test stitches on scrap fabric

Easy! Not only is your machine feeling good, but I bet you are too! Knowing you are putting in the effort to care for your machine is rewarding.

FYI

If you do not have the manual for your sewing machine, it is almost guaranteed that you can find it online. Search the make and model and you can likely find a digital version of the manual, or even be able to order a physical copy. If you are having a hard time finding these resources, reach out to the company directly for guidance.

If you still need some guidance on maintaining your machine, another option is to reach out to local sewing shops. Chances are you will find someone who may have the experience you need, or can point you in the right direction. The sewing community is strong and connected, don’t be afraid to reach out.

BONUS TIP

Want to go beyond the sewing machine? Another great maintenance task is keeping your cutting tools sharp.

Scissors can be sharpened to extend their life, no need to replace them. If that is not something you feel confident doing, you can find a local sharpening pro, or mail-in company.

Most rotary cutters are made to have their blades replaced, make sure you are using the correct replacement blades, and you can keep the same cutting tool for years.

Always take it slow and follow instructions anytime you are handling cutting tools.

Happy Sewing!
