It is easy to set organization aside when we start a creative project like sewing, however, maintaining a tidy workspace can increase productivity and even increase our ability to think creatively.

In this blog you will find tips and tricks to keep your space organized and we will even give you a link to a free PDF pattern and tutorial for one of our favorite “tidy” sewing room projects from last year.

Supply Storage

We find that the method which you use to store your supplies impacts your creative space the most. There are 2 ways to store supplies that make the biggest positive impact in our experience.

Clear- One of our favorite ways to store supplies is in clear containers. We find the visibility allows us to identify where items are, see the amount clearly, and prevents us from buying duplicates of things we already have. Plus, it looks nice and allows us to come up with ideas quickly and effectively because we can see what we have available without needing to unpack containers and bins.

Decorative- Storage doesn’t need to feel impersonal and plain. There are lots of ways to integrate design into a storage solution. Ditch the plastic bins for cozy baskets, replace zip top bags with colorful caddies, swap boring handles and knobs with ones that match your aesthetic, and repurpose items that bring you joy into functional art that brings intention and style to your space.

How does sewing fit in?

One of the best things about sewing is it allows us to have the final say in a design. We aren’t stuck using only what is available on store shelves- we have the ability to make our own beautiful organizational items exactly how we want them to look.

Tote bags, baskets, caddies, and more are all at your fingertips when you know how to sew. Just choose a fabric that suits your style and you are on your way to a beautiful and useful space.

Below you can see some examples of sewn projects that multitask as organizational tools. The sky is truly the limit- if you can think of it, you can find a way to create it.

Your Sewing Space

While supply storage has the biggest impact on organization- location is important as well.

If you need 20 minutes to locate and set up your supplies and sewing machine, you’re less likely to get started.

Try creating a permanent or semi-permanent setup, even if it’s just a corner table and some totes you can pull pull out. If it is close, quick, and handy, you are more likely to do and to be able to tidy up afterward. Integrating clever supply solutions can make this a more attainable goal.

Now What?

So now you have your essentials within reach and stored in a way that you like. The final part is to get started! We obviously think sewing is more enjoyable when your project is ready to go. If you aren't using one of our project kits- you will want to plan out a little more.

Take it in steps. Once you have chosen your pattern, do all of your cutting and prep. Have all of your fabric, thread, notions, etc ready to go. Having to go back and forth between tasks is inefficient and can bog you down.

If you find it difficult to stay organized, create a checklist and keep it handy. It is rewarding and helpful to be able to check off a task and move on to the next one. Plus, it makes starting back up easier if you need to pause in the middle of working on something. Simply refer to list and get back on track.

Ready for a Freebie?

BONUS TIP

Storage can get expensive. Visit your local consignment stores and crafter markets to find great deals on items. Take your time, and build your space at a pace that is affordable and doable for you. Eventually you will be able to turn into a fun and functional place that you love to spend time in.
