Written Directions
Seam allowances are 0.5".
Handles:
- Working with one piece E, fold one long edge toward the wrong side of fabric 1/2 inch and press to hold fold. Repeat with other long edge. Raw edges of fabric should not be sticking out the sides of the piece, but tucked behind the folded piece.
- Repeat step 1 with second piece E.
- Cut webbing into 2 pieces measuring 8" each.
- Place one folded piece E with folded in raw edge side facing one piece of webbing, centered along webbing. Pin in place and topstitch along both folded edges of fabric piece, through webbing, to hold in place.
- Repeat step 4 with second piece E and second webbing piece.
- Set aside until step 18.
Dividers: - Working with all pieces D, fuse one interfacing piece to the wrong side of one fabric piece and repeat with the other pair. NOTE: Bumpy side of interfacing should be facing fabric to be fused. Do not use high heat directly on interfacing or it will melt.
- With one fused piece D, fold in half with right sides of fabric facing and matching short raw edges. Pin and sew in place. Reverse stitch at beginning and end.
- Repeat step 8 with second fused piece D.
- Turn both sewn pieces right side out and press flat, with seam line pulled out to the edge and on one edge when pressed flat.
- Topstitch along both folded edges of both pieces D.
- Set aside until step 21.
Outside of Organizer: - Working with piece A, fuse interfacing piece to the wrong side of fabric piece.
- On one cut-out corner section of piece A, fold so that the short edges of the cut-out section are matched and right sides of fabric facing. Pin in place.
- Sew along this pinned edge, reverse stitching at beginning and end. This should make the project start to look like a 3-D corner of a basket.
- Repeat steps 14 and 15 with remaining 3 corners.
- Turn sewn piece right side out and poke corners out square.
- Pin one handle piece to one short raw edge of sewn piece, with fabric side of handle facing right side of sewn fabric piece and raw ends lined up on raw edge of sewn piece. Place the outside edges of the handle piece just inside the seamlines on the short end of the sewn piece. Handle should form a U-shape and the bottom of the U should lay across the fabric of the sewn piece.
- Repeat step 18 with second handle piece on opposite short end of sewn piece.
- Set aside until step 29.
Organizer Lining: - Place one sewn divider along the long edge of one piece B, matching raw edges, 1" away from the corner, with right sides of fabric facing and with majority of divider laying across piece B. Pin.
- Place piece C on top, right side of fabrics facing, pin.
- Sew divider in place by stitching just over the end of the long edge that has the divider pinned to it. Leave 4.5" on the opposite end of that long edge unsewn. Reverse stitch at the beginning end of the stitchline. This should make the project start to look 3-D.
- Place remaining raw edge of divider piece into open end of seams, arranging so that the divider is just at the edge of where the stitching stops. Pin and sew along this edge, reverse stitching at beginning and end.
- Repeat steps 21-24 with second sewn divider and second piece B.
- In a similar fashion to the process with the outside corners, on one cut-out corner section of this entire sewn piece, fold so that the short edges of the cut-out section are matched and right sides of fabric facing. Pin in place.
- Sew along this pinned edge, reverse stitching at beginning and end.
- Repeat steps 26 and 27 with remaining 3 corners.
Assembly of Organizer: - Place outside of organizer inside of lining with right sides of fabric facing and lining up raw edges and seam lines. The dividers will not allow outside of organizer to sit nicely inside of lining. Pin in place.
30. Sew around this pinned top edge, leaving a 3" unsewn hole in the center of one long side of the organizer. Reverse stitch at beginning and end. - Reach into the hole that was left and turn entire project right side out, pushing lining into outside of bag.
- Press around top edge of organizer, with seamline pulled out and on the edge. Turn raw edges into hole 1/2 inch and press closed.
- Topstitch around entire top edge of organizer to hold edge flat and close hole. Keep handle pieces pulled away from side--do not topstitch over the handle pieces.
- Cut one "handmade" tag about 1/4-inch wider than the lines on either side of the label. Fold cut ends to the wrong side along the line on either side of the label, press
- Place along topstitch seamline on one long side of organizer, about 1/2 inch below the stitching, parallel to top edge of organizer and centered from side to side. Pin to hold in place.
- Topstitch the tag in place along both folded short edges. Reverse stitch at beginning and end of each stitchline.
- Repeat steps 34-36 with a second "handmade" tag on the other long side of organizer.
