Heart Potholder Tutorial

Are you SEW ready to make a heart-shaped pot holder?

Remember: when making any type of project that will be used in a microwave or around hot items, always use 100% cotton fabrics, materials, and threads. Materials like polyester will actually melt or burn with heat.

Written Directions:

  1. Fold rectangular loop piece in half, matching long raw edges with each other, and with wrong sides of fabric facing each other. Press to hold crease.
  2. Open fold and fold one long raw edge in toward center crease line, with wrong sides of fabric still facing, and press to hold fold. Repeat with second long raw edge.
  3. Fold loop piece in half again, along the first fold made in step 1 so that the long raw edges of the piece are encased inside the folded strip. Pin closed and topstitch along both long edges.
  4. Place two half-heart shapes with right sides of fabric facing and straight edges aligned. Pin together along straight edge, then stitch along this edge. Repeat with second pair of half-heart pieces.
  5. Open both half-heart pieces and press flat along seam line. Then, fold closed along seam line with wrong sides of fabric facing and press with stitch line on the edge of the fold. Topstitch along these sewn edges, if desired.
  6. Place wrong side of one heart-shaped piece on cotton batting piece, then place sewn half-heart pieces on the right side of heart-shaped piece, one on either half of the heart-shape and with raw edges of the half-hearts lined up with the raw edges of the full-sized heart piece. Pin in place.
  7. Fold loop piece from step 3 in half, matching short raw edges with each other. Place this loop along a raw edge of the heart-shaped piece that is pinned, lining up all raw edges and with folded end of loop pointed toward center of heart-shaped piece. Pin in place.
  8. Place second heart-shaped piece on pinned pieces, with right side of fabrics facing each other. Line up all raw edges and pin through all layers.
  9. Sew around the entire heart, leaving a 4" hole along one edge. Reverse stitch at beginning and end.
  10. Make small cuts in the seam allowance around the entire project, about every 0.5", from the raw edge toward the stitch line. Make sure not to cut through stitch line.
  11. Reach into the hole left in step 9 and turn project right side out, pushing from the inside of the project along outside edge to push seam line out to the edge of the project.
  12. Press project flat with seam line pulled out to the edge of project. When pressing the hole left in step 9, turn raw edges into hole about 0.5", press flat, and pin closed.
  13. Topstitch around entire outside edge of project to hold flat and close hole.
