Written Directions

Seam allowances are 0.5".

TIP: In step 7, when pinning and sewing the edges together, try to line up each seamline with each other along the edge for a cleaner finish.

NOTE: Do not place the iron directly on interfacing—it may melt. Place the fabric piece on top of the interfacing piece or use a pressing cloth before pressing.

  1. Start with the two handle pieces. Center piece F on piece C with wrong side of fabric facing bumpy side of interfacing—there should be about ½” of fabric past all four edges of interfacing. Press to fuse in place.
  2. Fuse all other interfacing pieces to their matching-sized fabric pieces, in a similar manner to the process used in step 2.
  3. Fold both pieces E in half, with wrong sides of fabric facing, matching long edges with each other. Press to hold folds.
  4. Pin one folded piece E to the right side of a long edge of piece A, fabric 2, matching raw edges. Pin one piece A, fabric 1, to the same edge with right sides of fabric facing. This should sandwich the folded strip inside.
  5. Sew along this pinned edge and press seam allowance behind fabric 2.
  6. Repeat steps 5-6 with the other long edge of piece A, fabric 2.
  7. Sew together along short edges, with right sides together, to form a large tube shape. Press seam allowance open.
  8. With right sides together, pin bottom edge of this tube around edge of circle piece B, fabric 1. Sew in place, with circle piece on bottom so you can easily see and smooth wrinkles as you sew.
  9. Sew short edges of piece D together, with right sides facing, to form a large tube shape. Press seam allowance open.
  10. With right sides together, pin bottom edge of this tube around edge of circle piece B, fabric 1. Sew in place, just like in step 9.
  11. Turn right side out and place inside the basket that was finished in step 8 so that the right sides of fabrics are facing. Line up top raw edges, with side seams in the same place, and pin together.
  12. Sew around this top edge, leaving a 3” hole. Reverse stitch at the beginning and end.
  13. Turn right side out through hole and push the lining to the inside.
  14. Push the lining bottom all the way into the bottom of the basket. This will make the top edge of the outside fabric roll to the inside of the basket. Continue rolling this top fabric down until ½” is inside the basket, with seam allowance pointed toward bottom of basket. Press this flat.
  15. Press raw edges inside the hole, with the raw edges pointing the same way as the seam allowance—toward the bottom of the basket.
  16. Topstitch around top inside edge of lining, through all fabric layers.
  17. Working with piece C, fold one long edge toward the wrong side of the fabric ½” and press to hold fold. Repeat with second long edge.
  18. Fold in half, matching long edges with each other, along the folds. The raw edges should be nicely tucked into the inside of the folded strap. Press to hold.
  19. On one short end, unfold all folds and fold in half the opposite way—with right sides of fabric facing. Line up the short edge when folded and sew together, reverse stitching at each end.
  20. Clip corners along this sewn section and turn right side out. Holding the seam allowance open, fold the long raw edges back inside of the piece. Press to hold.
  21. Repeat steps 20-21 with the other short end.
  22. Topstitch along both long edges, starting and stopping at the same short end each time to reduce fabric twisting.
  23. Make a 1” buttonhole at each short end of the strap, starting ½” from short end.
  24. Attach a button on both sides of the outside of the basket, with each button exactly opposite each other and 1” down from the top edge.
  25. Place the handle onto the basket by inserting the buttons through the button holes.
