NOTE: Seam allowances are 1/2-inch unless otherwise stated.
Loop Tabs:
1. Working with one piece C, fold one long edge toward the wrong side of the fabric 1/2-inch and press to hold fold. Repeat with second long edge.
2. Fold in half, matching long edges with each other, along the folds. The raw edges should be nicely tucked into the inside of the folded strap. Press to hold.
3. Topstitch along both long edges, starting and stopping at the same short end each time to reduce fabric twisting.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 with remaining piece C.
5. Set aside until step 10.
Main Fabric Ends:
6. Working with all interfacing and main fabric pieces B, fuse interfacing pieces to the wrong side of each main piece. Arrange with the bumpy side of the interfacing facing the fabric and heat from the fabric side to avoid melting the interfacing.
7. Fold accent piece D in half, wrong sides of fabric facing, matching short edges with each other. Press to crease.
8. Topstitch along folded edge of piece D.
9. Place piece D on the right side of one main piece B from step 6, matching all raw edges with the raw edges on the square edge of piece B. Pin together along raw edges to hold in place.
10. Fold this piece B in half, matching long edges with each other, to find the center point of the curved edge. Fold one loop tab in half, matching raw edges with each other, and pin on the curved edge, centered on the center point of the curve. Raw edges should be matched with loop tab laying on wrong side of piece B and folded loop edge should point toward the center of piece B.
11. Repeat step 10 with the second main fabric piece B and second loop tab.
Outside of Cover:
12. Working with the interfacing and main fabric pieces A, fuse interfacing piece to the wrong side of main fabric. Arrange with the bumpy side of the interfacing facing the fabric and heat from the fabric side to avoid melting the interfacing.
13. Fold this piece A in half, matching short edges with each other, to find the center points of the long edges. Place one long edge center point on the center point of one round edge of one piece B, aligning raw edges with right sides of fabric facing and loop tab sandwiched in the center. Pin in place at center point.
14. With piece B laying flat, slowly work from this center point around to one end of piece A, matching raw edges and pinning along the way. Smooth wrinkles along the way, bending/folding piece A to follow the curve and keep raw edges aligned the whole way. The goal is to keep the fabrics wrinkle-free about 1/2-inch from the raw edges.
15. The bottom edges of piece A and piece B should be very close to the same length. If piece A is too short to reach the end of piece B, unpin and stretch piece A a little more while pinning through the curve. If piece A is too long, unpin and stretch less through the curve.
16. Repeat steps 14-15, from the center point and toward the other end of piece A.
17. Sew along this pinned edge, slowly sewing through the curved edges and taking time to smooth wrinkles/folds as you sew. Sewing with piece B on the bottom will keep wrinkles on piece A visible--stop sewing to smooth flat when needed. Reverse stitch at the beginning and end.
18. Repeat steps 13-17 with the second piece B on the opposite long edge of piece A.
19. Turn right side out and set aside until step 26.
Lining:
20. Working with the lining piece A, fold in half matching short edges with each other, to find the center points of the long edges. Place one long edge center point on the center point of one round edge of one lining piece B, aligning raw edges with right sides of fabric facing. Pin in place at center point.
21. With piece B laying flat, slowly work from this center point around to one end of piece A, matching raw edges and pinning along the way. Smooth wrinkles along the way, bending/folding piece A to follow the curve and keep raw edges aligned the whole way. The goal is to keep the fabrics wrinkle-free about 1/2-inch from the raw edges.
22. The bottom edges of piece A and piece B should be very close to the same length. If piece A is too short to reach the end of piece B, unpin and stretch piece A a little more while pinning through the curve. If piece A is too long, unpin and stretch less through the curve.
23. Repeat steps 21-22, from the center point and toward the other end of piece A.
24. Sew along this pinned edge, slowly sewing through the curved edges and taking time to smooth wrinkles/folds as you sew. Sewing with piece B on the bottom will keep wrinkles on piece A visible--stop sewing to smooth flat when needed. Reverse stitch at the beginning and end.
25. Repeat steps 20-24 with the second piece B on the opposite long edge of piece A.
Assembling the Cover:
26. Place the outside main fabric piece from step 19 inside the sewn lining piece so right sides are facing each other. Starting at the side seams, match side seams with each other and align raw edges. Pin in place, continuing aroung the project edge to match raw edges and seamlines.
27. Sew around pinned edge, leaving a 4 inch hole unsewn. Reverse stitch at beginning and end.
28. Turn entire project right side out through the hole left and push lining onto outside.
29. Press sewn bottom edge flat, pulling stitch line so that it is out at the very edge of the bottom when pressed.
30. Turn raw edges into hole about 1/2 inch and press. Close so that folded edges match each other and pin to hold in place.
31. Topstitch around entire bottom edge to hold flat and close hole.
Optional steps for added rigidity:
32. Reach into project, along one side seam line, close to the bottom edge of the project, and move the lining seam so that it lines up perfectly with the seam on the outside piece. Then push the lining seam toward the outside piece, folding the outside piece at the seam and around the lining seam. Pin this folded edge to hold the lining inside the outside piece.
33. Continue as done in step 32, around the entire length of the other seam line, taking care through the curved areas to avoid as many wrinkles as possible.
34. Stitch along this pinned edge, about 1/4 inch in from the edge, starting and stopping about 1 to 2 inches from the bottom edge of the project. Reverse stitch at beginning and end. NOTE: Sewing so that the end piece B is the piece that is facing up toward the presser foot will allow the piece to stay curved in a 3-D dish-shape while sewing. This will make it easier to avoid sewing wrinkles in place through the curved part.
35. Repeat steps 32-34 at the other end of the project.
