Possibly The Coolest Production Specialist Job Ever
Do you like planning, making schedules, and getting things done? Do you like crafting, making, or assembling things? Does the idea of printing onto quilting fabric intrigue you?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, here is some great news: you are in the right place!
Sew What Box is growing and we are in search of someone who is great at making schedules and plans, can work with software and technology, and is able to work with their hands. This individual will become the main production specialist in our small company, in charge of creating production schedules, printing fabrics, assembling project kits and products, and making sure that we can get our monthly shipments full of sewing goodies sent each month--on time.
To be honest, this job is not the most perfect job ever—there is some good news and there is some bad news. Let’s get the bad news out of the way first:
- This is not a work-from-home job. This job will be on site at our garage condo location in Post Falls (it is a really nice garage condo). This does also mean that there is no bathroom in our unit, but there is a very nice bathroom just a few steps away (plus, we do not have to clean said bathroom since it is not inside our unit). If you are seeking a job that you can do from home, then this is no longer the "coolest” production manager job ever, it is now the “suckiest” production manager job ever.
- There are no medical or retirement benefits. Instead, team members get to enjoy benefits like schedule flexibility, a boss that actually cares about them as a human being, and a workplace where everyone's creative ideas are taken into consideration.
- Review points 1&2.
Now let’s talk about the good stuff:
- The work is fun, fresh and dynamic. You will be working with our founder, Taylar, and have the opportunity to complete array of fun tasks like product testing and development, printing fabrics, photography and product packaging, and physical assembly of products.
- We aren’t big on stress. So, while we will expect you to work efficiently and get things done (and though we do sometimes have hard deadlines), we focus on open communication and learning from our mistakes.
- The schedule is pretty flexible. Need to work an earlier shift this week? Great. Going out of town for a trip in the fall? We can totally make it work.
- You will design things, learn about things, and make decisions on things that no big stuffy company would ever allow you to do.
- Are you a sewist or creative person (or, do you want to be)? We often have extra fabrics, notions, and DIY items that can be claimed by team members.
- Creative ideas are celebrated here. We often take input from our team members on new ideas and even have many great ideas that are iniciated by team members.
Now, let’s talk about the job requirements:
- You need to be the type of person who gets joy out of getting things done. Every day, you will bang out a list of stuff. Fun stuff. Important stuff. Necessary stuff.
- You will be managing production schedules. We have a small crew of workers that help assemble items and a large list of production deadlines, so working with people to craft a production schedule, communication, and timeliness are musts for this aspect of the position.
- You will be creating some digital assets that go with our physical product lines. So, an understanding of computers and technology is needed. You will work with software like Canva, email, Adobe video editor, Inkscape PDF editor, GIMP photo editor, and other computer-based programs. The ability to adapt to and learn new technologies, apps, and software programs is super important to this job.
- You must be okay taking photos. Part of this job will be photographing finished goods and products--don't worry, we will train you and no fancy cameras are needed.
- You will need to be able to spot errors and typos. Paying attention to the details is a must when creating our products--looking out for flaws in fabrics, spotting typos in digital products, or noticing if something is not coming out quite right.
- You will be doing repetitive tasks often (like cutting ribbons, putting patterns into envelopes, folding boxes, etc.). So, you need to enjoy these mindless-type tasks once-in-awhile while still keeping an eye for detail.
- You need to have a bit of a creative streak. Not a super creative, but the ability to decide things like what colors look best together, what a fun new sewing project product might be, or what a cute fabric print might look like.
- You will need to have the ability to use a sewing machine. You do not have to be great at using a sewing machine, but you cannot be scared of using a sewing machine. Part of this job will be testing out sewing projects (don't worry--all of our projects are beginner-freindly).
- You will need to be able to use a quilter's rotary cutter. You do not have to already be a master of cutting fabric with a rotary cutter, but you will have to be able to become proficient with one because much of our fabric cutting production is currently done with a rotary cutter.
- You must be able to lift 50lbs on occasion. The rolls of fabrics that you will be printing and working with can be about 50lbs. There should be someone else on site that can help you move a very heavy object once in awhile, but moving rolls of fabric will be an every day occurence.
In short, your job is to help us create good schedules in our production department, craft really amazing sewing products, make sure that we are getting products and subscription boxes assembled on-time, and maybe a couple of odds-and-ends that may need accomplished. And to have fun at work (who wants a job that isn’t fun?).
Our work environment is casual, but we do expect professionalism and punctuality. But what we don’t expect is perfection or existing production skills for you to qualify for this job. We can teach you that. We expect intelligence, energy, and a get-it-done attitude.
Job info:
This is a 30-hour per week, in-person position, in the Post Falls/Stateline, ID, area. Starting pay will be $17-$20 an hour, depending on experience. Shift hours are flexible, but will probably be 6-hour shifts, 5 days per week. We don't work weekends. Shifts while training will need to be between the hours of 6am and 3pm.
In addition to being able to notice details, you must follow systems and processes. In fact, just to prove that you are able to notice details and can follow procedures, when you apply for this position in the subject line of the email you must include “I am SEW excited for this production job” in the subject line. Yep, that’s our little trick to sort out the people who blanket send their resume to anyone and everyone, from the folks (that’s you) who are truly interested in this position.
We are looking to bring our new team member on board as soon as possible, but we will spend the necessary time to find the best fit.
Please send your resume and details to taylar@sewwhatbox.com.
